Book Entry Island: Winner of the ITV Specsavers Best Crime Thriller Read of the Year Review :

I've never read anything by Peter May before, so I don't know anything about his work, but when I picked up Entry Island I thought I was going to be reading a thriller. What I got was more of a historical fiction with a bit of a thriller thrown in. Don't get me wrong, I love historical fiction, but that's not what I wanted to read this time, I wanted a good thriller to keep me on the edge of my seat. This one was not that. There's been a murder on Entry Island, a small strip of land that lies in the Gulf of St. Lawrence that houses a mere 130 people. Detective Sime Mackenzie is one of 8 investigators charged with flying there to figure out what happened and whose responsible. When he meets the victim's wife, the prime suspect he instantly recognizes her, but from where? She doesn't recognize him and they've never met. The case looks pretty open and shut, but it's all circumstantial, so far.Detective Sime is a troubled man and has just divorced his wife, another detective on the scene. Their relationship now is tenuous at best. He's suffering from insomnia and losing his edge due to lack of sleep, but it's while he's not sleeping that the majority of the story takes place. When he drifts off for short periods of time and begins dreaming of his early ancestors. These dreams will eventually help lead him to the answers he'll need to solve the crime, but the dreams and his ancestor's lives seem to take over the book and I completely forgot there was even a murderer running loose on the island. The two stories did eventually come together and the ending did sway me into three stars rather than two, but I still didn't get the thrills and chills I expect from a thriller. I enjoyed it for it's historical aspects, I'm always in for historical fiction, but that's not what I wanted to read this time. I was disappointed. Like I said though I've never read from this author and don't know if this is a common thread in his writing, so I'm not going to harp on it too much. I'd be curious to know about his other books and may venture out and read another just to find out. I'm curious that way. This is the book of the month for April in one of the groups I belong to on GR, so I'll be anxious to see what others thought of it! Happy Reading!
I bought this book because my father's family history. His mother was born in the late 1800s on the Magdalene Islands in Quebec on the Scottish side of the islands where this story took place. My grandmother's family moved from the islands when she was young in the early 1900s, but the islands were where the McLean family settled when they left Scotland for Canada. The author, Mr. May, writes a fabulous tale of the people of the island, how they're perceived by outsiders, and weaves in the isolation of the islands and the Scots who have lived there for many generations. It's a grand story of this small set of islands with two communities separated by language and countries of origin, where outsiders seldom venture.
