Ebook About
"George Black rediscovers the history and lore of one of the planet's most magnificent landscapes. Read Empire of Shadows, and you'll never think of our first—in many ways our greatest—nationalpark in the same way again."—Hampton Sides, author of Blood and ThunderEmpire of Shadows is the epic story of the conquest of Yellowstone, a landscape uninhabited, inaccessible and shrouded in myth in the aftermath of the Civil War. In a radical reinterpretation of the nineteenth century West, George Black casts Yellowstone's creation as the culmination of three interwoven strands of history - the passion for exploration, the violence of the Indian Wars and the "civilizing" of the frontier - and charts its course through the lives of those who sought to lay bare its mysteries: Lt. Gustavus Cheyney Doane, a gifted but tormented cavalryman known as "the man who invented Wonderland"; the ambitious former vigilante leader Nathaniel Langford; scientist Ferdinand Hayden, who brought photographer William Henry Jackson and painter Thomas Moran to Yellowstone; and Gen. Phil Sheridan, Civil War hero and architect of the Indian Wars, who finally succeeded in having the new National Park placed under the protection of the US Cavalry. George Black¹s Empire of Shadows is a groundbreaking historical account of the origins of America¹s majestic national landmark.

Book Empire of Shadows: The Epic Story of Yellowstone Review :

To say Empire of Shadows isn't well researched would be a lie, but to say it was well written would also be disingenuous. Black does a superb job of presenting a LOT of information in a relatively succinct fashion that even the casual reader of history can process and enjoy. The problem is because of this style the narrative skips around tremendously during the first two-thirds of the book and only sticks with particular personages or episodes in Yellowstone's history for more than a few pages toward the fourth part of a five-part book. That is the other major issue with this history of Yellowstone - the park barely features in it until this fourth part (during the military exploration of the region) occurs. For the first 300+ pages we're told a great deal about the settlement of Montana, a little about the trails developing thanks to industrious settlers and a few tragic episodes of Native American genocide alongside multiple broken treaties and promises by the U.S. Government. It seems at times that because there wasn't much of what is now Yellowstone "explored" (i.e. written down as recorded history) prior to these excursions in the latter half of the 19th century, that Black fills in the gap with events leading up to its discovery. Not a bad choice, but it's also not really about Yellowstone. The research itself is somewhat of a problem only in that with all of the time Black spent pulling these sources together he relies on them far too frequently. When I received this book I was astonished to find the actual meat of the story comprises less than 430 pages - the remainder, which is a fair chunk of paper contains the references and bibliography for his copious and distracting footnotes that are sprinkled throughout the story. Obviously, I'm not a history writer, so the pressure to show your sources and point to where you have drawn conclusions or facts must be huge for someone writing this type of book but when a third of the tome is citing other works it almost makes me wonder why I didn't just skim this section, find the books Black references the most and then go read those. In the end, this is a really good quick reader on Montana history, U.S. Government-Native American relations and the early explorations of the park as long as going into it you aren't expecting an epic history based solely on our first national park.
The most in depth book written on the exploration of Yellowstone. A historical, adventure novel. Some of the characters we know, John Colter, Jim Bridger. Others, we know little of, such as Gustavus Doane, the man that created "Wonderland." We have breathtaking adventure and heartbreaking disappointment and loss. We are offered journal entries, letters and interview accounts.Depth is given to the genocide of Native people. The mismanagement of military leadership, and exploitation of our national treasure. One will chuckle about Bridger's exaggeration of Yellowstone, where emerald's hang from trees! Black's writing reminds me of Stephen E. Ambrose, who is the master of historical storytelling. The last section of the book are footnotes of historical research.
